about me
To start off I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Alyssa Kibbee. I am 20 years old and am a sophomore at St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont. My friends have a variety of nicknames for me including Al and Kibs, but I usually go by Aly. I am the oldest of three kids in my family. I have a younger brother, Brian, who is 18, and a younger sister, Leanne, who is 15. I am originally from Milford, Massachusetts, but I love Vermont much more than I would have ever expected.
I am a double major at St. Mike's. I'm majoring in Business Administration, and Media, Journalism and Digital Arts, which I will refer to as MJD. I am currently enrolled in a Marketing class that fulfills a requirement for my Business major. However, I'm not just taking this class because I have to, but because it is what I am interested in doing as a career when I graduate college. I decided to double major in Business and MJD because I feel they go together really well, especially because I would like to go into the marketing field.
This blog is going to go over the ins and outs of marketing. It will discuss all the things I have learned in class through my own perspective.

overview of marketing
According to our text book, Marketing by Kerin, Hartley, and Rudelius, "marketing is the activity for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that benefit its customers, the organization, its stakeholders, and society at large." Although the textbook gives a solid definition, we were asked in class to come up with our own definition of marketing. When I got to thinking about it, I asked myself what marketing really was. Is it just advertising a product or service? Or does it involve more than that? Throughout the duration of my blog posts, I will go more into depth about what marketing really is and how it affects every single organization that provides products or services to the everyday community.
To be successful in marketing your product, you must do a couple of things. First, you need to create a target market. You have to figure out who you want to sell your product or service to, because every product or service you make or offer isn't going to appeal to every age or gender. If you decide who your target market is, it will be easier to sell your product. Addressing the "4 P's", or the marketing mix, will also help make you successful in marketing. The 4 P's are as follows:
These four factors that make up the marketing mix are in total control of the marketing manager of the organization that is trying to market their good or product. Based on the needs of the organization, the marketing department is able to change or modify any one of these four factors, making them controllable factors.
All though these tips are extremely helpful, they're just the basics on marketing. As this semester goes on I will be posting more about marketing and how it works.

personal goals for this spring
As you can probably tell, I enjoy learning about marketing, and I find the subject very interesting. Because I would like to pursue a career in marketing when I graduate college, I intend to take as much out of this course as possible. Before starting this course, I had a general idea about what marketing was, and how important it is to every organization that sells a product or service to the public, but I wish to further my knowledge on the subject. When it comes to marketing, I would like to know how to be good at it, and what grabs the attention of the public the most.
